Cat enclosure size and space per cat

One Australian seller claims its 1.76 square metre enclosure holds "more than 4-6 cats". Another says its 1.57 square metre enclosure suits "up to 1-2 cats if you let them out daily to exercise". The second is 11 per cent smaller in floor area and claims 3 times fewer cats at the top of its range, 6 times fewer at the bottom of it. Only 9 of 68 products in this market state a capacity at all.

The capacity claims are inverted

Put the claims next to the floor area and they stop making sense as a group. The column on the right is not our recommendation and not a standard: it is the seller's own claim divided by our computed floor area, which is the only way to compare one seller's sentence with another's.

The spread runs from 0.29 square metres per cat on Samland Wooden Cat Cage Walk in Cat Condo House Kitten Ferret Enclosure Cage to 1.50 on Somerzby Homestead Cat Enclosure, a factor of about 5.1. The tightest claim is worse than it looks, because its wording is "more than 4-6 cats", which is open ended at the top rather than capped. Two of the claims are conditional in the other direction, qualified with phrases about letting the cats out daily to exercise or for a run, which is a capacity claim that quietly depends on the cat not being in the enclosure.

The contradiction is not only between brands. One seller publishes identical external and ground dimensions for two of its own models, prices them differently, and claims a different number of cats for each. Whatever that difference is, it is not floor area, because the floor area is the same number on both product pages.

What we are not going to tell you

We are not issuing a square metres per cat figure. There is no Australian standard for cat enclosure floor area, and a number invented here would be repeated as though there were one. State codes of practice exist for keeping cats, for example the Victorian Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Cats made under the Domestic Animals Act 1994, and they are guidance for the keeping of cats generally rather than a rule about how large an enclosure must be. If you want a figure with authority behind it, read the current version of the code that applies in your state directly from the state agency that publishes it, and check whether it speaks to enclosures at all before treating it as a size rule.

What this page can tell you is which units are genuinely large, what they cost, and which capacity claims are not consistent with each other. That is a comparison the market does not otherwise publish.

Height, and what walk-in actually means

Height is published on 57 of 59 enclosures, which makes it one of the better-covered fields here. The range is wide: 2500 mm on My Chicken Coop Purradise Large Cat Enclosure down to 610 mm on Anko 8 Panel Pet Enclosure. 32 units are 1,800 mm or taller, which is roughly the point at which an adult stops stooping, and 7 are under 1,200 mm, which is a unit you reach into rather than walk into. That difference decides how you clean it, whether a litter tray is workable, and whether an older cat can be reached without dismantling anything.

Levels are the weakest field on the page: a count appears on 18 of 59 enclosures, about 31 per cent, and every published count is 1. Sellers describe platforms, ramps, bridges and cat walks in prose instead of stating a number, so a multi-level unit and a single-level one can both come through with the field blank. We leave it blank rather than counting shelves in a photograph.

The size register

Floor area is computed by this project from published dimensions; no seller publishes one. Width and depth are the seller's headline figures, which on some models are external while the area beside them came from a separately published ground footprint, so the two columns will not always multiply out. Capacity is the seller's claim reproduced, not a verification of it.

Reading the large end of the market honestly

The largest floors in this dataset belong to netting enclosures over a light frame, not to timber or steel walk-ins. That is the same finding as the cost register seen from the other side: netting buys floor area cheaply and buys little else, while a timber walk-in buys structure, a solid roof and weather protection on a much smaller footprint. Neither is the better buy in the abstract, and the honest framing is that they are different products competing for the same search.

If several cats are the reason you are here, the published claims will not settle how many fit. What will help is the floor area, the height, whether the unit has usable levels, and the material, which is the same list the sellers decline to publish as a set.
