Outdoor cat enclosures in Australia
The comparison that matters in this category is not price. It is price per square metre of floor area, because that is the only way a $249 run and a $1,999 catio end up on the same axis. Across the 54 framed enclosures we could both price and measure, that figure runs from about $86 to $562 per square metre. Nobody publishes it, so we computed it.

Check whether you need one before you choose one. A containment duty is a duty to keep the cat on your property, and it is set by your council, not by any national rule. Some councils require it, many do not, and several phase it in by the cat's birth date so an existing cat is untouched. Start at the council containment register, then come back here.
Floor area is our figure, not the seller's
This needs saying before a single number below is used. Not one of the 68 products we sourced publishes a floor area. Every square metre figure on this page was computed by us from the seller's own published width and depth, and each record's notes name which pair of numbers it came from.
That derivation is not uniform, and the difference matters. 8 of the 54 units are computed from a ground footprint the seller publishes separately from its overall size, which is the number you actually stand on. A further 5 are computed from external dimensions where the seller publishes a ground figure for other models but not this one, and those records say so: an external figure slightly overstates usable floor because it includes roof overhang and, on the timber house-and-run models, the nesting box. The rest are computed from the single overall length and width the seller gives, which is all there is. One Coops and Cages model publishes an external width 490mm wider than its own ground footprint, the largest gap in the data, which is why this sits in the body of the page rather than in a footnote.
So treat these as comparable to each other, computed the same way from the same kind of published figure, and treat a few of them as generous by a margin the seller has not quantified. They are still the only like-for-like size comparison published anywhere in this category.
The same floor area, 6 times over
The clearest way to see what the per-square-metre figure exposes is to hold floor area constant. 6 units in the table compute to exactly 3.24 square metres, the most common footprint in the market. They are the same size. They are not the same price.
| Unit at 3.24 m2 | Frame | Height | Price | Per m2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Somerzby Manor Catio | netting over frame | 1800 mm | $350 | $108 |
| Catnets Single Size 1.8m Portable Cat Enclosure | steel | 1800 mm | $479 | $148 |
| Catnets Premium Portable Cat Enclosure 1.8m | steel | 1800 mm | $599 | $185 |
| Betta Pet Systems Deluxe Cat Enclosure | Australian steel | 1820 mm | $745 | $230 |
| Omlet Outdoor Cat Run - Catio - 2 x 2 x 1 | steel | 1150 mm | $819 | $253 |
| Omlet Outdoor Cat Run - Catio - 2 x 2 x 2 | steel | 2050 mm | $1,129 | $348 |
$779 separates Somerzby Manor Catio from Omlet Outdoor Cat Run - Catio - 2 x 2 x 2 for identical computed floor area. Some of that gap is real: coated weld mesh and a bolt-together steel panel are not a net over a frame, and the netting units are the ones you can take down and move. None of it is explained by size, which is what the headline prices imply.

Per square metre is price divided by our computed floor area, rounded to the nearest dollar. 4 further framed units are excluded because a price or a dimension is missing: one seller publishes no dimensions at all for its $320 catio, another publishes no price for a 2.94 square metre model, and one model is no longer sold direct by the brand that supports it. 6 of the rows above carry prices the seller's own page dates to October 2021 and has never updated.
What to buy, by situation
There is no single winner here, and any page that names one is hiding the condition that made it win. Each of these is the top of a filtered sort, with the filter stated.
- Most floor area for the money, and you have the yard for it. Catnets Quad 3.6m x 3.6m Portable Cat Enclosure at $1,120 works out at $86 per square metre across 12.96 square metres, the largest unit and the cheapest rate in the table. It is a net over a steel frame, not a solid structure, and it needs 3600mm by 3600mm of flat ground.
- Lowest total spend, and you do not need to walk in. Coops and Cages Resort Cat Run at $249 is the cheapest framed unit we found, at $111 per square metre. It is 820mm high, so it is a crawl-height run: you reach in, you do not step in. That is a real limitation on cleaning and on vet access, and it is why the price is what it is.
- You want to stand up inside it. Of the 31 units at 1.8m or taller overall, Catnets Quad 3.6m x 3.6m Portable Cat Enclosure is the cheapest per square metre at $86. Note that overall height is not the same as a walk-in door: several units 1.8m tall have run doors around 1.3m, and the seller publishes the door dimension separately where it does at all.
- You want timber that looks like garden furniture. 31 of the units are timber-framed, and Coops and Cages Resort Cat Run leads them at $111 per square metre. Timber is the house-and-run shape most of this market sells, and it is also the shape most likely to be a poultry chassis: two sellers ship perches with their cat enclosures and tell you not to install them.
- You want metal, and you want it to last. 21 units are steel or aluminium framed, Catnets Quad 3.6m x 3.6m Portable Cat Enclosure cheapest among them at $86. One Victorian manufacturer sells bolt-together Australian steel panels with galvanised or powder-coated pricing quoted side by side, which is the only place in this market where the coating is a priced choice rather than a description.
- You have a courtyard, not a yard. The two smallest footprints are Somerzby Tower Portable Cat House at 0.65 square metres and Betta Pet Systems Cat Tower at 2400mm tall. Both are vertical units: they buy climbing height rather than floor, and both sit at the expensive end per square metre ($562 and $517) precisely because floor area is what you are not getting.
Two sellers are one catalogue
Somerzby and Coops and Cages are substantially the same supplier with two shopfronts. Multiple models appear on both sites at identical prices and are served from identical image paths. One seller lists as "Resort" what the other lists as "Mansion", at the same price. Models appearing under both names include the Condo, Stacey, Castle, Tower and the pair one site calls a Resort and the other calls a Mansion.
Our own product table records only each seller's exclusive models, so the duplication is not visible in the table itself. It is reported here because a buyer comparing the two believes they are comparing the market when they are comparing one supplier with itself. Between them those two shopfronts account for 18 of the 54 rows in the table above, so a buyer who checks both and then decides has not compared the market. Verified 2026-09-12.
What nobody will tell you
These are the gaps, counted across all 68 records rather than asserted. Each is a fact about the market, not about any one seller.
| Specification | Published by | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Wind rating | 0 of 68 | No standard, no region, no wind speed, from anyone. Cyclonic north Queensland and suburban Melbourne are sold the same flat-pack. |
| Floor area | 0 of 68 | Every figure on this page is ours, computed from published dimensions. 58 records carry one. |
| Cat capacity | 9 of 68 | Where claimed, the claims disagree by roughly four times at the same floor area. |
| Delivery price | 5 of 68 | Only Omlet publishes freight, per size, inside its own offer data. Everyone else defers it to a postcode field on a 68kg to 156kg flat-pack. |
| Mesh aperture | 29 of 68 | The most safety-relevant number in the category, and fewer than half publish it. Published apertures run from 10mm to 50mm. |
| Warranty term | 17 of 68 | Two sellers publish a period. Several link a warranty page from every product page and state no term on it. |
| UV test result | 13 of 68 | One brand publishes an accelerated weathering result on its netting. It is the only quantified durability figure in the dataset. |
Two further things worth knowing before you order. 7 of the units we recorded were listed out of stock on the date checked, including every size of one brand's range, so a price in the table is not a promise of availability. And 9 of the 68 records are accessories rather than enclosures: tunnels, porches, mesh rolls and connectors, kept out of the price table because a mesh roll has no floor area and would wreck the ranking. They are covered on runs and tunnels.
Narrower questions
58 of the 59 units here are framed enclosures and 1 is a panel pen, which is a different product costed separately on the portable page. If the cat is staying inside, indoor enclosures is the narrower answer. If you would rather modify the yard than put a box in it, look at netting or cat-proof fencing, and if you are pricing a build, DIY costs a timber and mesh enclosure against these kit prices.
Common questions
What does an outdoor cat enclosure cost in Australia?
Framed units in this comparison run from $249 to $1,999, but headline price tells you very little on its own because the units are not the same size. Costed per square metre of floor area, the 54 framed enclosures we could price run from about $86 to $562 per square metre, with a median of $276. That is a 7-fold spread for the same commodity, which is floor area under a roof.
How much space does one cat need in an enclosure?
No Australian seller answers that with a figure you can check. Only 9 of the 68 records we collected carry any capacity claim at all, and the claims that exist contradict each other: one seller claims more than 4 to 6 cats in 1.76 square metres while another claims 1 to 2 cats in 1.57 square metres. A fourfold disagreement at nearly the same floor area means capacity claims in this market are marketing, not specification. Use the floor area and decide for yourself.
Are these enclosures rated for wind?
None of them. Not one of the 68 products we sourced publishes a wind rating of any kind: no AS/NZS 1170.2 reference, no wind region A, B, C or D, no engineered wind speed. The closest anything comes is an instruction to peg the unit down in windy areas, which is advice rather than a rating. A flat-pack sold on one page to a buyer in suburban Melbourne and a buyer in Cairns carries no published basis for either.
Do I need council approval or a containment rule check first?
Check the rule before you check the product. Whether your council requires containment at all, and whether the structure itself needs building or planning approval, are separate questions from which enclosure to buy, and both can change the answer. Our council register covers which councils impose a duty, under which instrument and from when.
