Indoor cat enclosures
Indoors, the specifications that dominate the rest of this site stop mattering. There is no weather, no UV and no wind, so the fact that 0 of 68 products publish a wind rating is suddenly irrelevant. What replaces it is unforgiving in a different way: floor space you have to give up permanently, height you may not have, and whether the thing has a floor at all.

Four buyers, one product category
People looking for an indoor enclosure are usually solving one of four problems, and the right answer differs sharply between them.
- An apartment with no balcony. This is permanent. The unit is furniture, it will be in the room for years, and footprint is the binding constraint.
- Post-surgery or post-illness confinement. This is temporary, often a few weeks, and the requirement is restriction rather than containment. The cheapest thing that works is the right thing.
- Introducing a new cat. Also temporary, but the enclosure needs to let two cats see and smell each other without contact, which makes mesh aperture and door placement matter more than size.
- A rental where nothing can be attached to the building. A freestanding unit solves this outright: it stands on the floor, nothing is drilled, nothing is made good at the end of the lease.
Almost nothing here is designed for a room
1 of the 68 products we sourced names indoor use in its own title: Samland Large Indoor and Outdoor Wooden Cat Enclosure with Sleeping House and Climbing Platforms. Everything else on this page is an outdoor product that fits inside, which has four consequences worth knowing before you order.
- You pay for a roof you do not need. Weatherproof roofing, asphalt sheet and shade sails are priced into these units and do nothing in a lounge room.
- The footprint is sized for a lawn. The most common shape in this market is a long, shallow house-and-run designed to sit against a fence. Several are over 2m long and under 1m deep, which is a good fence shape and an awkward room shape.
- Most of them have no floor. Only 4 of the 68 records mention a floor or a tray at all: a raised floor, mesh on the floor, pull-out trays or a lining. The rest assume the ground is the floor, which is fine on grass and is your carpet indoors.
- Height can exceed the room. The tallest unit we recorded is My Chicken Coop Purradise Large Cat Enclosure at 2500mm. Measure the ceiling, not just the wall.
The units that fit in a room
25 framed units compute to 2 square metres of floor area or less, which is roughly the size at which a unit stops being a piece of yard equipment and starts being furniture. They run from $163 to $562 per square metre. Small units are expensive per square metre everywhere in this market, and that is not a conspiracy: the doors, corners and roof cost the same whether the panel between them is 1m or 3m.
Floor area here is our computation from each seller's published width and depth, not a figure any of them publishes. Where a seller gives only an external dimension, it slightly overstates the floor you actually get.

Read the footprint column rather than the floor area column when you are placing one. Two units at nearly the same area can be completely different shapes. One of the units above measures 1010 x 2585mm, which wants a whole wall, while Catnets Lite Tower Portable Cat Enclosure 2.3m Height holds 1.35 square metres in 1160 x 1160mm and will sit in a corner.
Buying height instead of floor
The indoor trade is usually vertical. 8 units in the table above are at least 1.7m tall on 1.5 square metres or less, which means they give the cat climbing height for a small piece of the room. They are also, without exception, at the expensive end per square metre, because floor area is exactly what you are not buying.
| Vertical unit | Height | Floor area | Price | Per m2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Betta Pet Systems Cat Tower | 2400mm | 1.44 m2 | $745 | $517 |
| Catnets Lite Tower Portable Cat Enclosure 2.3m Height | 2300mm | 1.35 m2 | $385 | $285 |
| Betta Pet Systems Large Cat Enclosure | 1820mm | 1.08 m2 | $465 | $431 |
| Betta Pet Systems Medium Cat Enclosure | 1820mm | 0.81 m2 | $390 | $481 |
| Somerzby Condo Cat Enclosure | 1800mm | 1.34 m2 | $379 | $283 |
| Somerzby Tower Portable Cat House | 1800mm | 0.65 m2 | $365 | $562 |
| Coops and Cages Greta Cat Run | 1710mm | 1.33 m2 | $299 | $225 |
| Samland Outdoor Wooden Cat Enclosure Catio with Wheels, Double Cat Houses and Roof | 1710mm | 0.69 m2 | $349 | $506 |
Here is the problem with buying height: nobody publishes what is inside it. 19 of 68 records carry a level count, and every single one of them says one level. Shelves, ramps, platforms and bridges are described in prose instead, as "two storey construction" or "7 cat walks", and we leave the field null rather than counting shelves in a photograph. So a 2.3m tower and a 2.4m tower cannot be compared on the one thing that makes vertical space usable, which is how many surfaces a cat can actually stand on.
One product is worth naming for indoor use specifically: Samland Outdoor Wooden Cat Enclosure Catio with Wheels, Double Cat Houses and Roof at $349 is the only unit in our data published as being on wheels, 0.69 square metres on a 830 x 830mm footprint and 1710mm tall. Being able to roll a unit away from a wall to clean behind it is an indoor-only advantage that no seller markets as one. It is missing from our main price table because our accessory filter excludes any product whose name contains the word wheel, which is a flaw in our filter and not in the product.
Mesh, if there is a kitten or a second cat
For introducing cats, the mesh is the interface: it is what the two animals meet through. 29 of 68 records publish an aperture, which is fewer than half, and among those that do the published figures run from 10mm squares to 50mm hexagonal netting. Two brands publish explicit kitten warnings tied to their own aperture, one advising extra mesh or covers on the upper half for a kitten or very small cat, the other saying kittens of six months and under should not be left unattended. Both warnings are creditable and both exist only because those two brands publish an aperture at all. The sellers that publish nothing have not solved the problem, they have just not mentioned it.
When the cheap option is the right one
For temporary confinement, the honest answer is that you probably do not need any of the units above. The one panel pen in our data is $29, 2.13 square metres and 610mm high with no roof. That makes it useless as outdoor containment, because a healthy cat clears it without thinking. For a cat on enforced rest that is not supposed to be jumping at all, the absence of a roof is not the same failure. We are not going to tell you what your vet already will: confinement after surgery is a clinical instruction, and the enclosure is just the furniture that makes it easier to follow.
That figure carries a sourcing caveat we publish rather than hide: the retailer blocks automated access, so its price and dimensions come from search snippets and a price mirror rather than from the seller's own page as read by us. Check it in a browser.

If the cat can get outside at all, an outdoor unit is better value per square metre and the full ranking is in the enclosure comparison. If there is a window but no yard, window catios is the cheapest way to give a cat outside air, and balcony enclosures covers the apartment case where there is a balcony to enclose. If the unit has to fold away between uses, see portable enclosures. And if you are weighing indoor litter furniture rather than containment, that is a different product entirely: litter box furniture.
Common questions
Is there such a thing as a purpose-built indoor cat enclosure?
Barely. Of the 68 products we sourced, 1 names indoor use in its own product title, and the rest are outdoor units that happen to fit in a room. That is worth knowing before you buy, because an outdoor unit brings a roof you do not need, a footprint sized for a lawn, and frequently no floor at all.
What size indoor enclosure does one cat need?
No seller publishes a defensible answer, and the capacity claims that do exist disagree by roughly four times at the same floor area. What we can give you is the measured trade: 25 framed units compute to 2 square metres or less, from $163 to $562 per square metre. The smallest is 0.65 square metres on a 805 x 810mm footprint. Measure the wall you intend to give up before you shortlist anything.
Is an enclosure a reasonable way to confine a cat after surgery?
For short-term confinement the cheap option is often the right one. A $29 open-topped panel pen is useless as outdoor containment because a healthy cat goes straight over it, but a cat on post-operative rest that is not supposed to be jumping is a different problem. Follow the vet's instruction on activity restriction; that is a clinical question and this is a price comparison, not veterinary advice.
Do the weather specifications still matter indoors?
No, and that is the one piece of good news in this category. 0 of 68 products publish a wind rating and only 13 of 68 publish anything resembling a UV test, which are the two largest specification gaps in the Australian market. Indoors they stop mattering entirely. What replaces them is footprint, usable height, whether it has a floor, and mesh aperture if there is a kitten involved.
