Cat enclosures in Australiacompared on what sellers actually publish
Every other result for this search is a company selling you its own enclosure. This one is not selling anything. It answers the two questions that come first: whether your council actually requires containment, and what these things cost once you compare them on the same basis.

The last two are not typos. They are why this site exists.
Councils, prices and specifications checked 12 September 2026
Four things we found
Each one came out of reading the source rather than the summary: the council's own by-law, the seller's own listing. Scroll and they stack.
-
Whether you need one at all depends on your postcode.
48 of the 68 councils we verified impose a containment duty and 19 impose none.
In Queensland every council we checked imposes one. In Western Australia 1 of 14 does, and two WA councils have deleted their containment clauses by gazetted amendment.
The council register -
Containment is not a curfew, and almost every article conflates them.
Of the councils imposing a duty, 36 state hours in their instrument and 12 state none at all, which in practice means always.
8 councils phase the rule by the cat's birth date, so an existing cat is often untouched by a rule reported as already in force. Only 4 of 68 publish a dollar penalty.
How each council words it -
No seller publishes a floor area, so nobody can compare these on size.
We computed it for 58 of 68 products from their published dimensions, which is what lets a small expensive unit and a large cheap one sit on one axis.
Framed enclosures run $86.42 to $561.54 per square metre, a 6.5-fold spread.
The price register -
Not one product publishes a wind rating.
Zero of 68. No reference to AS/NZS 1170.2, no region, no wind speed, from any seller, on flat-packs sold on one national page to a country whose northern regions are cyclone-rated.
The closest anyone comes is telling you to peg it down in windy areas.
The materials register
One more thing worth knowing before you compare. Somerzby and Coops and Cages are substantially the same catalogue. Multiple models appear on both sites at identical prices and are served from identical image paths. One seller lists as "Resort" what the other lists as "Mansion", at the same price. A buyer weighing one against the other believes they are comparing the market when they are comparing a supplier with itself.

products publish a wind rating
The same flat-pack is sold on one national page to Hobart and to Cairns. No seller says which wind region it was designed for, or whether it was designed for one at all. The only published UV test on the mesh comes from a single brand.
Materials and weather registerHow this site works
Every council row was read from that council's own local law or by-law, and every specification from the seller's own listing, each with a link and the date it was read. Where a figure is not published it says not published, because in this category the absences are frequently the most useful thing on the page.
Floor area is the exception and it is labelled everywhere it appears: no seller publishes one, so every area on this site is our own arithmetic on their published dimensions, and some of those are external measurements that slightly overstate usable floor.
We have not tested these products and do not claim to have. More about how this is put together, including exactly which sellers could pay us and which never will.
Common questions
Do I have to contain my cat?
It depends on your council and the answer is genuinely split: of the 68 councils we verified across 6 states and territories, 48 impose a containment duty and 19 impose none. There is no national rule. Our register lists each council with the instrument it relies on and the date we checked it.
What does a cat enclosure cost?
$29 to $1,999 across the 59 units we could price from 12 brands. That range is close to useless on its own, because it compares a fabric pop-up with a walk-in timber structure. Costed per square metre of floor, the framed enclosures run $86.42 to $561.54, which is the comparison nobody publishes and the one worth using.
How many cats fit in one?
Nobody agrees, and the disagreement is not small. Only 9 of 68 products state a capacity at all, and among those that do, one seller claims more than four to six cats in 1.76 square metres while another claims one to two in 1.57. That is roughly a fourfold difference at nearly the same floor area, and two of the claims are conditional on the cats being let out, which is capacity that depends on the cat not being in the enclosure.
Does this site make money from what it recommends?
Not today. One seller in this category runs an affiliate program, we have not applied to it, and there are no tracking links anywhere on the site. Every other brand and retailer covered here pays nothing and never will, including the one that carries the most traffic. The notice at the top of each page is generated from that configuration, so it cannot quietly go stale.
